The iD Cards design communication app is based on outcomes from PhD research that identified communication problems with the use of design representations (sketches, drawings, models and prototypes). These include inconsistencies in the use of names; a lack of understanding of when they were used; and not being aware of different functions. The app identifies 32 types of sketch, drawing, model and prototype, when they are used and for what types of information. By making this information readily available on iPhone and Android smart phones, industrial designers and all professions associated with product development have a more complete understanding of language, use, and the range of sketches, drawings, models and prototypes at their disposal.
